It Makes All the Difference

Last week I was in a meeting with a potential new client. This company is a large oilfield waste handling division of an annual $30 billion parent company, so the stakes were high.

As usual, the conversation sparked many confused looks on some people’s faces as I spoke about our technology, its products, and its uniqueness. I could tell I was losing the attention of a particular District Manager (with sole decision-making authority, by the way).

He likely thought, “Oh great, another snake oil salesman.” It was then that I realized I needed to make it clear to him that a significant part of my background was exactly what his current role and responsibilities are.

We’re Experts in Our Fields

This made all the difference in the world to the tone of the discussion because he realized that I knew exactly how our product applied to his operations and how it would improve their bottom line. We could change their revenue model by enabling them to recapture old lines of business, reduce OPEX, and streamline their operations, among other things.

By the end of the meeting, he was more excited about starting a project than anyone else in the room. We are beginning the first of many projects for this company before the end of this month.
