The Catawater® Advantage
When using the word “enabler,” do you conjure up the negative connotation of the word? In fact, in science and technology, to enable holds a significant positive connotation. Have you heard of KET?
What Are KETs?
The acronym in this context refers to Key Enabling Technologies, which have become synonymous with modern innovation. Introduced in 2009 as an EU policy concept, “KETs are knowledge-intensive technologies associated with high R&D, rapid innovation cycles, high capital expenditure, and highly skilled employment. They enable process, goods, and service innovation throughout the economy and are of systemic relevance.”
There is a common theme in these KETs, and one Catawater® is familiar with. These enabling technologies drive radical change in the capabilities of a user or culture and are characterized by the rapid development of subsequent derivative technologies, often in diverse fields, and are often considered disruptive technology.
How Do You Identify a KET?
The categorization of KETs varies but can be widely grouped into six technologies:
- Micro and nanoelectronics
- Nanotechnology
- Industrial biotechnology
- Advanced materials
- Photonics
- Advanced manufacturing technologies
Each increases industrial innovation to address societal challenges and contributes to advanced and sustainable economies. Catawater® categorically fits as an industrial biotechnology with multiple derivative technologies in diverse fields. But, while most of the definition applies to Catawater® technologies, rest assured, “high capital expenditure” and “highly skilled employment” are requirements that do not apply to our customers. Catawater® has done that work to deliver a product that equates to tremendous cost savings for the end user.
Catawater in Practice
Here’s a practical example:
We recently entered a service relationship with a large oilfield waste-handling company. Traditionally, treating the waste received takes a significant amount of time. Minimum contaminant removal thresholds must be met so the waste can be permanently stockpiled to make room for more waste. The current process can take up to two years or more to complete. This ties up valuable and limited process space at the facility.
The Bottom Line
From a purely economic standpoint, the bottom line is that if they could accelerate the process, they could increase the revenue the facility generates simply by allowing it to take in more waste. It’s sort of like in the restaurant business, where only a certain number of tables are available. The faster people eat and leave, the more customers the restaurant can serve, which equates to more revenue and profit. Common sense, right?
This is where Catawater® comes in. The goal of the waste company is to wash the waste to remove salt and oil contaminants. Catawater® is a novel biocatalyst working entirely through natural processes. Catawater® increases the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water, increases the microbiome’s activity and natural decomposition, and speeds up the process exponentially. Waste treatment can be completed within two months or less vs. two years. Great for the environment, and consequently, more revenue to be handled and generated.
Reducing Costs
That brings us back to “capital expenditure” and “highly skilled labor,” neither of which are necessary for the end user. Due to how Catawater® works, the actual cost to operate is significantly reduced, bolstering a company’s bottom line and providing an even more secure employment base for the individuals who rely on the company’s success.
